I am a Certified Gottman Therapist. This is the highest level of training offered by the Gottman Institute. In 2012, I began working for the Gottman Institute as an assistant in production and operations of the Art & Science of Love workshops presented by John and Julie Gottman.

What this opportunity gave me:

  • Their research and therapeutic tools lead to higher functioning and well-being in my own marriage.
  • I am a better husband, friend, and therapist because of my training in Gottman therapy.

A meaningful life for many people is only as good as the relationships they build in their lifetime. Our closest relationships can provide a gateway to evolution and growth. Gottman therapy provides a pragmatic, evidenced based model of how to promote a successful relationship, allowing you to find your way to greater connection to your most important relationships, including yourself.

The Gottman Theory

More than 30 years of research have culminated in the theory of the Sound Relationship House. In the simplest terms John Gottman discovered what makes relationships work at their highest level, couples that he describes as the Masters of Relationships, as well as what makes relationships fail. Gottman therapy gives direction on how to build your Sound Relationship House.

If you want to get an idea of how all of this works, check out the New York Times bestselling book The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work. Dr. John Gottman writes in this book, “Although you may feel your situation is unique, we have found that all marital conflicts fall into two categories: Either they can be resolved, or they are perpetual, which means they will be part of your lives forever, in some form or another.” Gottman says that 69% of marital conflicts are perpetual problems, and these are of particular focus in much of the work performed by a Gottman-trained therapist. We can all learn how to better manage the perpetual problems in relationships.

The Gottman Method is designed to support couples across all economic, racial, sexual orientation, and cultural sectors. To learn more, go to the Gottman’s website at www.gottman.com. Find out if this process of therapy feels right for you.

What to expect from a Gottman therapeutic process

We begin with an intensive assessment process. Gottman therapy begins with the following steps:
  1. Introductory information session to gather historical information and examine the nature of conflict within the relationship (90 minutes).

  2. Each person in the relationship will take an online survey through the Gottman website to explore the relationship and their individual health.

  3. Meetings with each partner after both parties complete the survey to discuss individual perspective of the relationship and matters of personal health (45 minutes with each partner).

  4. After the assessment is complete, the therapist will present the results and treatment plan to explain the couple’s position within the frame of the Gottman’s Sound Relationship House. Together, clients and therapist decide on the best course of action regarding frequency, duration, and appropriate meeting times (90 minutes).
